Plan Philly: Vacant properties in Point Breeze transferred for affordable housing

The Women’s Community Revitalization Project announced on Tuesday that it has secured two publicly-owned vacant properties in Point Breeze and is planning to build around 30 affordable houses in the neighborhood, which has seen sharp property-value increases over the last few years.

There are groups working at the local level who have been trying to raise the alarm about expiring affordability restrictions in the city. The Philadelphia Coalition for Affordable Communities has been lobbying City Council about the issue in recent months, putting the pressure on Democratic politicians in a city that prides itself on its progressive bonafides. One of their leaders is Nora Lichtash, director of the Women’s Community Revitalization Project (which builds and maintains affordable housing), has been particularly vocal on the subject of expiring affordability.

The WCRP held a ceremony to celebrate its 30-year history as a woman-led organization that has worked to strengthen Philadelphia’s poorest neighborhoods since 1986.

The Philadelphia Zoning Board of Adjustment this week voted to approve plans for the Mamie Nichols Townhomes, a project that will deliver 33 new affordable apartments and townhomes to the quickly gentrifying Point Breeze section of South Philadelphia. The project is led by the Women’s Community Revitalization Project (WCRP) and Citizens Acting Together Can Help (CATCH).
